The numbers on this homepage are not a performance

A live counter that climbs while you stare is a cheap trick. It tells advertisers there is a room. It tells visitors they are late to a party. It is also a fast way to fail a review that asks whether your traffic is real.

Owner of the Internet stores a view field on each takeover. The current owner’s number is that field. The stats strip on the homepage sums those stored numbers. Neither figure increments on a timer in your browser. If the number looks still, that is the point.

Those stored numbers are still not unique visitors, not Google Analytics sessions, and not proof you should buy a media plan against. They are part of the throne’s bookkeeping. Analytics, when you allow it in cookie settings, is a separate system and stays off until you opt in.

We used to animate presence — visited, online — because the page felt like a court and courts have crowds. That animation was fiction. Fiction on a metrics widget is how sites get labelled invalid traffic. The live dot still means the page is serving a current owner. It does not mean thirty-one strangers are sitting in a waiting room.

If you are here to take the crown, ignore the number and bring a site that survives a close-up. If you are here to audit the property, the honest version is this: one promotional homepage, a named operator, a public archive, and counts that do not act.
